I am currently weighing my options between purchasing a retirement property in Bulgaria versus Spain, focusing primarily on upfront budget and long-term upkeep. While Spain offers a fantastic Mediterranean climate and established infrastructure, Bulgaria seems significantly cheaper to enter, though I am unsure about hidden maintenance costs and winter heating bills. Could anyone who has experience living in or buying property in both countries share insights on how the daily cost of living and climate compare for expats?

We bought a place in Spain five years ago, and while the upfront cost was higher than Bulgaria, the resale value and infrastructure are unbeatable.

If budget is your absolute top priority, Bulgaria wins hands down. You can get a massive house for the price of a small studio in coastal Spain.

Winter heating in Bulgaria can actually catch you off guard. Electricity prices have risen, and older homes lack proper insulation.

Spain's climate is much milder in winter compared to Bulgaria, where you definitely get proper snow and freezing temperatures in most regions.

Daily cost of living in Bulgaria is significantly lower, especially groceries, dining out, and local services like healthcare.

Maintenance costs in Spain can be high due to community fees (comunidad) for apartments, especially if there's a pool and gardens.

If you buy near the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, you need to watch out for humidity and dampness during the shoulder seasons. Give this Mold, Humidity, and Insulation Issues in Bulgarian Coastline Apartments: What to Inspect a read before making an offer.

We looked at both and ultimately chose Spain because the flight connections back to the UK are so much more frequent and affordable.

Bulgaria is a hidden gem for retirees who want a quiet, low-cost lifestyle, but you really need to learn some basic Bulgarian to handle daily bureaucracy.

Property taxes are dirt cheap in Bulgaria compared to Spain, where IBI (property tax) and municipal garbage fees add up every year.

Have you considered looking into places like Sozopol? It has a gorgeous vibe, though prices there are higher than in rural villages. Read more about it in this Real Estate in Sozopol: Old Town Charm, Property Prices, and Rental Potential article.

Spain has an enormous expat community, making it very easy to integrate without speaking fluent Spanish at first. Bulgaria is a bit more rugged in that sense.

Upkeep on a Spanish villa with a pool can drain your wallet quickly if you aren't prepared for high utility and maintenance bills in the summer.

The food quality in both countries is fantastic, but fresh produce at local Bulgarian markets feels remarkably cheap compared to Western Europe.
