Hey everyone, I just bought an unfurnished apartment in Sofia and I'm starting from scratch. Which furniture stores offer the best balance of quality and price here, and do places like Jysk or IKEA provide reliable assembly and delivery services? Also, for those who have gone through this recently, what is a realistic total budget for furnishing a standard two-bedroom place?

Congrats on the new place in Sofia! For the best balance of price and decent quality, IKEA is usually the go-to for basics. JYSK is great for smaller items, mattresses, and textiles, but their main furniture is a bit hit-or-miss compared to IKEA.

IKEA's delivery and assembly services are generally reliable, though they can get booked up weeks in advance during peak moving seasons. JYSK usually outsources delivery to local courier services, which can be a bit of a mixed bag depending on the driver.

For a standard two-bedroom apartment, a realistic budget ranges from 8,000 to 15,000 BGN if you are mixing IKEA with some local Bulgarian manufacturers. If you want high-end custom furniture, it can easily go over 25,000 BGN.

Check out Aiko and Mebel Videnov as well. Videnov is super budget-friendly, though the flat-pack assembly can test your patience. Aiko sits somewhere between IKEA and higher-end Italian studios operating in Sofia.

Before you spend everything on furniture, make sure you have your finances sorted out. If you are still figuring out local banking or money transfers for your down payments, this guide on how to open a Bulgarian bank account as a non-resident for property transactions is super helpful.

IKEA delivery in Sofia was smooth for me, but the assembly team arrived two hours late. They did a professional job putting together the wardrobes, though, so it evened out.

If you want solid wood instead of standard particle board, look into local Bulgarian workshops around Sofia. They often charge similar prices to mass-market retail but the craftsmanship lasts much longer.

JYSK is fantastic for bedroom textiles, pillows, and simple desks. I wouldn't buy a main living room sofa there, but their budget items are great for temporary setups.

Budget-wise, expect to spend around 10,000 BGN for a minimalist look using mostly IKEA and Videnov. Don't forget to budget an extra 15-20% for delivery, assembly, and those annoying little hardware store trips.

Aiko has a huge showroom on Tsarigradsko Shose. Their delivery is reliable, and they often run promotions where assembly is discounted if you spend over a certain amount.

Make sure you measure your doorways and elevator before ordering large wardrobes from IKEA. Sofia's older buildings have notoriously tight stairwells, and getting a heavy box up to the fourth floor can be a nightmare.

Speaking of property management and hidden costs, if you ever decide to buy a second place on the coast, read up on maintenance fees in Bulgarian seaside resorts: typical costs and how to avoid overpaying so you aren't caught off guard.

To save some cash, I bought my kitchen from IKEA and my living room furniture from Videnov. Kept the total budget right around 7,500 BGN for a two-bedroom, but I assembled the Videnov stuff myself.

IKEA assembly is worth every stotinki if you hate hex keys and cryptic manuals. They built my entire kitchen in one day without a hitch.

Welcome to Sofia! Give yourself at least a month to get everything delivered and installed. Stock issues happen frequently here, and waiting on backordered items is pretty standard.
