Buying a Home in Bulgaria vs Spain: Budget Entry Point, Climate, and Maintenance Costs

I am currently weighing my options between purchasing a retirement property in Bulgaria versus Spain, focusing primarily on upfront budget and long-term upkeep. While Spain offers a fantastic Mediterranean climate and established infrastructure, Bulgaria seems significantly cheaper to enter, though I am unsure about hidden maintenance costs and winter heating bills. Could anyone who has experience living in or buying property in both countries share insights on how the daily cost of living and climate compare for expats?

We bought a place in Spain five years ago, and while the upfront cost was higher than Bulgaria, the resale value and infrastructure are unbeatable.

If budget is your absolute top priority, Bulgaria wins hands down. You can get a massive house for the price of a small studio in coastal Spain.

Winter heating in Bulgaria can actually catch you off guard. Electricity prices have risen, and older homes lack proper insulation.
We looked at both and ultimately chose Spain because the flight connections back to the UK are so much more frequent and affordable.

Bulgaria is a hidden gem for retirees who want a quiet, low-cost lifestyle, but you really need to learn some basic Bulgarian to handle daily bureaucracy.

Property taxes are dirt cheap in Bulgaria compared to Spain, where IBI (property tax) and municipal garbage fees add up every year.
Spain has an enormous expat community, making it very easy to integrate without speaking fluent Spanish at first. Bulgaria is a bit more rugged in that sense.

Upkeep on a Spanish villa with a pool can drain your wallet quickly if you aren't prepared for high utility and maintenance bills in the summer.

The food quality in both countries is fantastic, but fresh produce at local Bulgarian markets feels remarkably cheap compared to Western Europe.
