My spouse and I are currently looking to purchase a property in Bulgaria to spend our retirement years in a peaceful seaside location. We've narrowed our options down to Ravda and Sarafovo, but we are struggling to decide which one offers better infrastructure, healthcare access, and year-round community life. Could anyone with local experience share the pros and cons of living in both villages long-term?

We retired to Sarafovo three years ago and absolutely love it. Unlike Ravda, which feels a bit more like a bustling resort in the summer, Sarafovo is practically a suburb of Burgas. You have regular city bus lines running 24/7, making trips to the large supermarkets and hospitals in Burgas super easy without needing a car every day. The community is very stable year-round with a great mix of expat retirees and locals.

If you are planning to live there through the colder months, I strongly recommend reading this guide on Living on the Bulgarian Coast in Winter: Dampness, Heating Costs, and Reality Check before making your final decision. Both Ravda and Sarafovo suffer from humidity issues in winter, so proper insulation is key when choosing a property.

Ravda has a special charm, especially the older part of the village away from the main beach strip. However, healthcare access is definitely better in Sarafovo simply because you are technically within the Burgas municipality limits. In Sarafovo, you have local GP practices and pharmacies that stay open all year, whereas in Ravda you might find yourself traveling to Nessebar or Sunny Beach for specialized care during the off-season.

We looked at both villages and ended up buying in Sarafovo primarily because of the flat terrain. Ravda has some nice areas, but walking around Sarafovo, especially near the newly built fishing port and the promenade, is much easier on the knees for daily retirement strolls. Plus, the Burgas airport is right next door, which is fantastic when our grandkids come to visit from the UK.

Keep in mind that wherever you buy on the coast, maintenance fees can sneak up on you if you choose a gated complex. Before signing anything, definitely check out Maintenance Fees in Bulgarian Seaside Resorts: Typical Costs and How-to Avoid Overpaying. Ravda has quite a few large complexes with high yearly fees, whereas Sarafovo has a higher percentage of standalone houses and normal residential buildings.

My parents live in Ravda year-round and they enjoy the slower winter pace, but they do complain that public transport into Nessebar and Burgas gets quite sparse once October hits. In Sarafovo, because it is essentially part of Burgas city transport network, bus number 15 runs every 20 minutes even in the dead of winter. That was the deciding factor for us.

Community life in Sarafovo feels very cohesive. There is an active Facebook group for expats and locals, regular neighborhood gatherings, and several great restaurants that stay open all winter long. Ravda tends to completely shut down after September, turning into a ghost town until May, which can feel a bit isolating if you are looking for an active retirement community.

Healthcare was our number one priority when we retired to Bulgaria. Sarafovo wins hands down because you are just a 15-minute drive away from the major multi-profile hospitals in Burgas. In Ravda, you are closer to the Sunny Beach medical centers, which are mostly geared towards summer tourists and can be overpriced or closed in the winter.

We actually ended up expanding our search beyond Ravda and Sarafovo and even looked at Sveti Vlas. If you are curious about how other coastal towns compare in terms of infrastructure and lifestyle, this article on Real Estate in Sveti Vlas: Luxury Gated Communities, Prices, and Off-Season Living offers some great comparative insights that might help you weigh your options.

Both are great choices for retirement, but it really comes down to your lifestyle preference. Sarafovo is peaceful, orderly, and feels like a quiet seaside neighborhood of a big city. Ravda is more authentically village-like, slightly more affordable property-wise, but requires a bit more planning for daily logistics in the winter. Rent in both places for a couple of months before buying to see which vibe fits you best!
