Pomorie vs Nessebar: Which Coastal Town Is Better for Year-Round Living?

My spouse and I are planning to relocate to the Bulgarian coast and we are torn between settling down in Pomorie or Nessebar. We want a place that doesn't completely turn into a ghost town during the winter months, but still offers good amenities, healthcare, and a peaceful atmosphere. Can anyone who has lived in or spent significant time in both towns share their experiences regarding community life, cost of living, and infrastructure during the off-season?

My wife and I moved to Pomorie three years ago, and we have never regretted it. Unlike Nessebar, which relies heavily on tourism and gets very quiet in the winter, Pomorie has a vibrant local community that stays active all year round. The town has great municipal healthcare facilities, regular bus lines, and a genuine Bulgarian feel.

Nessebar is stunning, especially the old town, but it really does turn into a ghost town from November to April. Most restaurants and shops close down. If you want year-round living with functioning infrastructure, Pomorie is definitely the better choice.

We spent a winter renting in both towns before making a decision. Pomorie wins hands down for off-season living. It has grocery stores, pharmacies, and cafes that remain open, plus a lovely pedestrian promenade where locals walk even in January.

One thing to keep in mind when buying property in either town is the legal process. Before signing anything, I strongly recommend reading this guide on independent legal representation in Bulgaria to protect your investment.

Pomorie's mud baths and sanatoriums mean that people visit for health tourism even in the shoulder seasons, which keeps the local economy ticking. You won't find that same level of year-round vitality in Sunny Beach or the tourist-heavy zones of Nessebar.

The cost of living in Pomorie is slightly lower than in Nessebar, particularly for real estate and dining out. Utilities and local taxes are quite reasonable in both places, but daily expenses feel more grounded in Pomorie.

If you have pets or need regular medical care, Pomorie has several reliable doctors and pharmacies open year-round. Nessebar has clinics too, but many doctors split their time between Burgas and the coast, making off-season appointments a bit trickier.
Nessebar's new town area has modern apartment blocks, but the traffic and parking during summer are a nightmare. In winter it clears out completely, but the wind coming off the sea can feel much harsher than in Pomorie's sheltered bay.

Community life is much warmer in Pomorie for expats. There is an active group of foreigners and locals who organize language exchanges, coffee mornings, and charity events throughout the winter.

Both towns are close enough to Burgas that you can easily access the mall, large hypermarkets like Metro and Kaufland, and specialized medical specialists whenever you need them.

If you are planning to buy a house with a yard rather than an apartment, make sure you understand the rules regarding foreign ownership. Non-EU citizens often need a company, so check out this article on company registration for buying land in Bulgaria.

Pomorie has a very peaceful atmosphere once the summer crowds leave. The air quality is great, the mud lake is unique, and you can enjoy peaceful walks along the beach without bumping into tourists.

Go with Pomorie. Nessebar is a wonderful place to visit for a weekend getaway or to show guests around the historic sites, but for actual day-to-day living, grocery shopping, and community feel during the colder months, Pomorie feels much more like a real home.
