Living on the Bulgarian Coast in Winter: Dampness, Heating Costs, and Reality Check

Hey everyone, I'm seriously considering spending this winter by the Black Sea in Bulgaria, looking at places like Varna and Burgas. However, I've heard mixed reviews about extreme humidity, mold issues in seaside apartments, and unexpectedly high electricity bills for heating. Could anyone who actually lives here year-round give me a realistic breakdown of what to expect and how to properly prep a flat for the off-season?

Varna winter resident here. The humidity is no joke. The sea breeze brings in a lot of moisture, and if your apartment doesn't have proper external insulation (samisolyatsiya), you will definitely see black mold in the corners by January.

Heating costs depend heavily on your AC. If you rely on a standard inverter air conditioner running 24/7, expect your electricity bill to jump significantly. Mine reached around 250-300 leva during the coldest months.

Burgas gets very windy in January and February. The wind cuts right through poorly sealed PVC windows. Make sure you check the window seals before renting or buying anything.

If you are thinking about buying instead of renting, make sure you do it right. Read this Step-by-Step Guide to Buying Property in Bulgaria as a Foreigner before signing any preliminary contracts.

Dehumidifiers are an absolute lifesaver. Buy a compressor-type dehumidifier the first week you arrive. You will be shocked at how much water it pulls out of the air, even with the heating on.

Life in Varna and Burgas slows down dramatically in the winter. Many restaurants and beach bars close down completely, but the cities themselves remain active because they are major urban centers, unlike small resort villages like Sunny Beach which become ghost towns.

Top floor and corner apartments are the worst for winter dampness. Try to find a middle-floor apartment with neighbors living above, below, and on both sides. Their heating will help keep your place warm too.

Electricity prices in Bulgaria are regulated, but they still add up when you are heating a poorly insulated coastal flat. Always ask the landlord for historical utility bills from the previous winter before you commit to a long-term lease.

The dampness also ruins clothes and leather goods if they are kept in closed wardrobes against outer walls. Leave some space between your furniture and the walls so the air can circulate properly.

Don't let the horror stories scare you completely. Winter days by the sea can be wonderfully sunny and crisp, perfect for walks along the Sea Garden in Varna, just as long as your indoor living situation is well-prepped.

Ventilation is key. Even when it's freezing outside, open all your windows wide for 5 minutes twice a day to flush out the humid indoor air and let dry fresh air in.
